About the Scholarship

Heidelberg University’s Vision is to prepare our students to be global citizens who think critically, communicate effectively, and serve thoughtfully. This scholarship supports students who demonstrate commitment to global citizenship through knowledge, creative and critical thinking skills, awareness of their own cultures, and appreciation of other cultures, the quest for purpose, integrity, and spiritual growth, and engagement with the community. This scholarship is eligible for renewal based on continued participation during your time on campus. More details will be included in the award letter.

This application will remain open until March 15th, with recipients being notified of their award late March.

About the Application Essay

Your essay should answer the following questions as they pertain to this quote.

  • Diversity
    • Tell us how you’ve experienced or witnessed diversity in your life, OR
    • What did you learn from surrounding yourself with individuals who hold a variety of values, identities, or experiences?
  • Equity. Whereas equity means that each individual or group of people are given the exact same resources or opportunities, equity recognizes that each of us comes from different circumstances and require different resources to reach equal outcome or success.
    • Please describe efforts you’ve taken in your community (hometown, school, workplace, etc.) to further social equity. Be specific in describing the action(s) you took, the reason for the action, and the outcome of your effort.
  • Inclusion
    • Please describe efforts you’ve taken in your community (hometown, school, workplace, etc.) to be inclusive. Be specific in describing the action(s) you took, the reason for the action, and the outcome of your effort.
  • Belonging
    • Illustrate a time when you experienced belonging, how that felt, and why it’s important.

DEIC Scholarship Rubric

Your application will be scored based on the following criteria:

  • Assertion of how diversity is a fact within their lived experience
  • Discussion of how they have chosen inclusivity
  • Discussion of how they took action to create equity
  • Description of how they have experienced belonging in the past (or hope to experience it at Heidelberg)
  • Quality of response to the submitted materials (clarity and critical thinking)
  • Demonstration of commitment to community involvement and engagement at Heidelberg or elsewhere
